Elizabeth George Speare

Elizabeth George Speare (November 21, 1908 – November 15, 1994) was an American writer of children's books, best known for historical novels including two Newbery Medal winners. She has been called one of America's 100 most popular writers for children and some of her work has become mandatory reading in many schools throughout the nation. Indeed, because her books have sold so well she is also cited as one of the Educational Paperback Association's top 100 authors.

Speare is one of six writers with two Newbery Medals recognizing the year's "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children". In 1989 she received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for her contributions to American children's literature.

Life

Speare was born in Melrose, Massachusetts to Harry Allan and Demetria Simmons George. Her childhood, as she later recalled, was "exceptionally happy" and Melrose was "an ideal place in which to have grown up, close to fields and woods where we hiked and picnicked, and near to Boston where we frequently had family treats of theaters and concerts." She had an extended family with one brother and many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and most importantly, very loving and supportive parents. Speare lived much of her life in New England, the setting for many of her books.

Elizabeth George

Susan Elizabeth George (born February 26, 1949) is an American writer of mystery novels set in Great Britain.

She is best known for a series of novels featuring Inspector Thomas Lynley, 19 in number as of 2015. The first eleven were adapted for television by the BBC as earlier episodes of The Inspector Lynley Mysteries.

Biography

Elizabeth George was born in Warren, Ohio, to Robert Edwin and Anne (née Rivelle) George, their second child—she has an older brother, author Robert Rivelle George. Her mother was a nurse, and her father a manager for a conveyor company. The family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area when she was eighteen months old. Her father wanted to get away from the Midwestern weather.

She was a student of English, having received a teaching certificate from the University of California, Riverside. While teaching English in the public school system, she completed a master's degree in counseling and psychology. She received an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Cal State University Fullerton in 2004 and was awarded an honorary Masters in Fine Arts from the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts in 2010. She also established the Elizabeth George Foundation in 1997.

Early life

George was born in Granite, Oklahoma November 11, 1944 to Richard Henry White and Ruth Harrison White. She graduated College High School in Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1962. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from The University of Oklahoma in 1966. Her first year out of college, George was a junior high and high school English and business teacher. She was also a Logos Bible Institute instructor and a Bible study lecturer and curriculum development team member at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California.

Writing

George began writing in the early 1990s. She authored her first book, Loving God with All Your Mind in 1994. Her 1997 release, A Woman After God’s Own Heart, gave her exposure and credibility, which propelled her writing career and bestseller status. George has authored over 80 books since the mid-90s. To date, she has sold over 9 million books worldwide, translated into 19 languages.
